I love the addition of races to EO 5. This makes go and chess combined look like tic-tac-toe.

The girl in the middle of the cover always reminds me of Nene from New Game!

As an EO fan, EO5 is a massive disappointment to me. Ditching the elaborate mega dungeons of EO3 a s EO4 leaves what is basically just another Untold game, minus the characters and story. At the micro-level, there are a bunch of little improvements, but at the macro there just so much less going on than in prior games. Feels like a major regression for the series.

The design philosophy of EO5 was apparently meant to be a "return" to the elements of the franchise that ATLUS' research indicated the fanbase liked the most. That meant ditching both the EO4 dungeon structure and the Untold game's focus on story over customization.

I'm not that far into the game yet (it took Amazon three tries to ship a copy that wasn't crushed) but from what I've seen so far, I like it more than EOU2 and less than EO3. It definitely feels like it was worth the extremely long wait between the Japanese and Western releases.

You know, I've been considering buying a EO game for my 3DS for awhile. And the reviews I've read, this included, seems prompting me to buy EO 3 or 4 instead. Confused

I've always had a thing for dungeon crawling. I love the Mysterious Dungeon games. And I've really wanted to try out EO.

Come to think of it, with how well the Switch is going, and how EO uses map making as a main feature, do you guys think this might be the last game in the franchise?

Etrian 3 and Etrian Untold 2 (the 3DS remake of Etrian 2) are generally considered the best entry points to the franchise. If you're a big fan of the Mysterious Dungeon games, there's also Etrian Mystery Dungeon.

ATLUS plans to move the franchise to another console after releasing three more games on the 3DS: Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2, Persona Q2 (a Persona 4 / Persona 5 crossover game that uses the Etrian Odyssey engine) and an as-yet-unnamed Etrian title that, depending on who you ask, will either be Etrian 6 or Etrian Untold 3.

I think the EO series gets a bit of an unwarranted rep sometimes as "only for hardcore gamers." I wouldn't consider myself anywhere approaching hardcore and there have been plenty of games I quit because they felt too hard/frustrating and I haven't felt that way with any of the EO games I've played so far (EOU, IV, the demo of 2U & now V). What interested me in the series initially was the cartography, as I'd never seen something like that in a game before, and the sense of exploration/discovery plus the challenge of using the map you drew to figure out the puzzles of how to avoid FOEs remains my favorite feature. Oddly enough, it feels like it scratches the same exploration itch that 4X games do for me? Anyway, on the mapping/dungeon design count, I'm enjoying this game so much more than IV so far. I really disliked the mini-mazes and only 3-floor dungeons in IV, and size aside the layouts just felt unimaginative and repetitive. Exploration became tedious rather than exciting. I did love the classes in IV though, so that helped redeem it somewhat, but since the maps are my favorite part it remains my least favorite game of the series so far.

I'm not super far into V so far (only on floor 10, seeing again that I am not a hardcore gamer haha), but I definitely like the classes more than Untold, maybe not as much as IV, I'm not sure. The race system is interesting. I'm looking forward to finally unlocking the thing I know happens after the 2nd stratum, haha. Difficulty-wise, though, there are some aspects that do feel a bit too easy, even for me. The food being the main one, and unity skills also sometimes contributing to that. I guess I could always just stop collecting food, though. I also wish there were more bar quests and fewer adventure episodes. Or maybe just more bar quests either way, haha. Maybe the Untold series just has more of those? I remember really liking a lot of the ones in that game. I plan to play Untold 2 eventually, just haven't gotten around to it yet, since I only picked up my 2DS again recently and saw V was coming out soon.

And I hope the last 3DS EO game is 3 Untold heh.

For @BodaciousSpacePirate and @moogrin, thanks a lot for the insight.

If I fail to get EO 5, I think I'll try Untold 2 or 3 at least.

Man, seeing all these new games, I think I might need a vacation.

I have almost the complete collection of Etrian Odyssey games( all except for the original one which I will get one day). I will warned you that with each newer game the quality of life have significant improvements to the prior games. I only say this because if you have started from the newer ones and then go to the older ones the lack of qol might be a bit frustrating.

Anyways I have always enjoy this games for their difficulty and not the hand holding that a lot a newer games have now adays. For me this is not to hard, but not to easy as well. Last word of advice if you are going to play these games is always be prepared, you will never know when you need to warp back to town only to find out you ran out or forgot to but the warp item.

Thanks.

I've had experience with Elminage Gothic, so I think the EO games would at least be a more pleasant experience. Very Happy
