Pretty good summary of why I buy disks and only stream to sample a series that I think I might want to buy. In the end it is still streaming =/= physical release.

I remember when a whole bunch of anime on Hulu was about to expire which speed up plans to watch some shows. With uncertainty like that, happy to go the home media route.

Sorry but the article reads as a scare tactic. No mention whatsoever is done about the "Catalog titles" that are added long after a series was originally broadcast and/or released on disc. I have found several such catalog titles that crunchy has available outside the anglosphere without subtitles in other languages except english (why bother if the series is now old and will not attract many viewers even if back in the day was a classic). I do not mean to say most titles will sooner or later leave popular video streamers, but YMMV. Specially now that crunchy is dabbling in non english dubs, that is a reason to bring back old classics since nowadays most people are not used to reading subtitles.

I buy what is available on BD/.DVD and stream (sadly illegally, toonami or FunimationNow isnt available in the Netherlands) season dubs. Perhaps im old fashion but i love to collect anime on BD/DVD.

Though not exactly an anime (though it was adapted from a manga), this exact situation is what happened for me with Team Astro. I first saw the J-Drama/toku series over at DramaFever back in 2011, & I loved it. I did what I could to share my feelings on the show by reviewing it over at my blog back then, but I knew that most people weren't going to go to a site that dealt exclusively with J & K-Dramas.
Anyway, in 2015 I managed to get some more people interested in Team Astro, with one of them even wanting to start watching it immediately... Only for the show to no longer be in DramaFever. He even asked & got a quick response saying that the show wasn't available anymore. Since DramaFever likely licensed it back in 2010 or so, that meant that it was likely that the standard 5-year license expired, so I could no longer get people to check it out. Sure, it also got picked up by Viki, but only one episode ever got crowdsubbed over there, & even that site's license for the show has since expired. What's most disappointing is that I can essentially guarantee that Team Astro will never be given a second chance here in North America, simply because next to no one even knew of it back when it was available, so I've since had to import the Japanese DVDs; there's no way in hell we're ever getting a physical release over here. All I can say is that people better take their chance to watch a show like Blue Blazes legally over at Viki right now, where it's called Blue Fire, before that license expires & you have to go back to relying on fansubs... But at least Blue Blazes got that luxury, because Team Astro certainly never did. |

Fans are currently feeling the pain of all the Aniplex licenses expiring from streaming and home media, Aniplex still hasn't put Baccano!, Birdy the Mighty Decode or FMA 2003 up for streaming anyhere.

So what about the shows that Crunchyroll is a part of the Production Committee of (i.e.: Love Tyrant, Classroom of the Elite, Restaurant to Another World, URAHARA, Masamune-kun's Revenge etc.)*? Do the same terms apply or is it a different case?
* Note: Technically, Crunchyroll is a part of the Production Committee, but under Crunchyroll-Sumitomo Group Partnership Fund. So, I don't know what happens when Sumitomo suddenlt opt out of the initiative. |

Ideally, but there are things that slip thru the availability cracks. For example, I am never going to shell out $260 (at the cheapest) for all of Your Lie in April and there's no paid download for the series. so guess it's the pirate's life for me if Crunchyroll decides to stop hosting it~ |

Aniplex of America, the bull elephant in the china shop. Not streaming catalogue titles makes even less sense than not putting them back into print.... about as much sense? More sense? Even Servant x Service, the one AoA title I own, is out of print now, no fanfare, no warning, just gone... Is it still steaming? I'm kind of afraid to look. Honestly, I can't trust a company who'll take a creative work they own and say "We'll make this amount of money on it... and not a penny more" by doing limited print runs on every physical release and then not stream it on top of that. I do hear less and less people each year singing the praises of their business tactics, that's pretty much the only bright side. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind replacing my Bandai Gurren Lagann DVD collection with an affordable BD set. |

I would, too. But, I bought my Bandai TTGL DVDs for around $50 (in three sets). I somehow doubt AoA's price is going to be anything close to that. |

Why I buy disks 101. Streaming is only useful to me if titles are guaranteed to be available indefinitely. I have no interest in paying for it otherwise.
As for Gurren Lagann on BD, the UK's Anime Limited is your friend. Get your shows for reasonable prices while metaphorically flipping off AoA. It's a win-win! |

That is when you have the option at all. Critically acclaimed Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu does not have an american disc release and probably never will. So the day crunchy stops streaming, for all practical purposes it will cease to exist like the flame of a candle. This is a very real problem because most series will never have a fan following like i.e. Re:Zero and Funi or Sentai will not release them because the smaller the print run, the tighter any profits become. There is also the problem of limited print runs, I have no doubt many people are even now discovering Full Metal Alchemist, tough luck since Funi's release have been out of stock for many months and there is no new disc print scheduled since Funi no longer has said rights. |
