Horrible anime. Side character took over more screen time than MC.

Apparently Toshiki Inoue's also a tokusatsu show writer, most notably some Kamen Rider instalments.
He's infamous for putting themes such as edgy grit, chronic misunderstandings and flawed MC's in his shows.

He's more notable for it than his anime work too.
Sword Gai uses a lot of the aspects he developed while working on the early modern stuff like Agito, Kiva and Faiz. You either like his style or you don't. I don't find there's really a lot of people who sit in between.

I'm not sure if the anime's disjointed mess is a result of Inoue's heavy melodrama live action history or if it was because of the show's massive production issues.

Netflix's portfolio of exclusive anime titles has been pretty solid to date, with more hits than misses

I'm not sure I agree. Of the Netflix original series I'd say only Devilman crybaby is a hit - B: The Beginning, Sword Gai, and from what I've seen of A.I.C.O. are, if not downright terrible (although Sword Gai is pretty bad) but almost offensively mediocre. They're like someone going through a checklist of "Stuff American Anime Fans Like" assembled by a guy who last watched anime in the '90s, and creating shows chock-full of tired old clichés and tropes that one would have thought have retired long ago. Sword Gai in particular is like a forgettable tryhard action flick from the '90s.

Honestly, I'm almost angry that Netflix has all that money to spend on anime, and they seem to be choosing to spend it on... these.

Massive production issues? Now I'm interested. What happened?

Sword Gai, or as I like to call it, "GARO: Zero Sugar."
