Love that first video, very stylish. Mario interacting with real world people is always nice to see.

Vamos Rafael Nadal on that fantastic AD!!! I can’t believe one day I would see you on an anime site. It’s good to be a tennis aficionado and anime fan at same time

Seriously, how many people here knows Rafa, kinda curious, great Champion and incredible fighting spirit, Federer and Rafa are my favorite tennis players for good reasons Embarassed

The live-action trailer features Spanish professional tennis player Rafael Nadal.

Will he be a playable character though? I wish to watch a video of him being soundly defeated by the Chain Chomp.

I doubt you have to be much of a tennis fan to know the top players like Federer, Nadal, Williams etc. Similar story with Ronaldo and Messi for soccer I would assume.

The general anime fandom isn't so isolated from the real world that they don't know celebrity athletes that most normal people would know, is it?

I definitely know what you mean, but I did not mean it in an ill-spirited way.

As famous as Rafa, Roger, Serena etc are, they are hardly household names no matter in USA, or other Asian countries I have lived. Especially USA ( I assume Europe’s tennis exposure must be relatively better), Tennis is far from a mainstream sport, basketball, baseball and soccer can be seen as mainstream worldwide because it attracts wide range of people that few other sports can. I am not a soccer fan but I know many famous soccer stars, that is not a surprise, but I would have no idea when asking to name a Hockey star or Ping pong star.

That...is why I am curious to ask that question. Plus, in that video’s comment section, you will see a lot of comments asking: who is the guy playing against Mario? (Although there are fair share of people recognizing Rafa, makes me very happy)

Are you from the USA? If so I understand why you think basketball and baseball are mainstream, but in comparison to tennis on a global scale they are far from it.

Tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world, surpassed only by soccer (of course) and cricket (although India alone has a large part to do with that). Roger Federer is the most recognisable athlete in the world behind only Ronaldo and Messi, with Nadal also within the top 10, according to ESPN.

It is interesting though that Nintendo went with Nadal rather than Federer for the promotion. Usually tennis games only have one or the other, due to the undoubtably huge licensing fee for their image, although it has not been made clear if Nadal will be included in the game.
