Uh, why? The film got raked over the coals. Even before getting into whitewashing, the movie was just boring.

Oh! American Death Note got a sequel!?
I heard that the movie was flop but looks like not. Or Netflix really have money to burn.

I dont know how people can determine if Netflix Movie can be a flop when no numbers or anything are ever released.

I want whatever they're smoking, the film was an absolute disaster and they are actually considering making a sequel?

I don't think the movie was anywhere near as bad as people try and make it out to be so....I actually am looking forward to this sequel.

Netflix knows the first movie was critically panned, so I think several things are up in the air here:

- It's safe to say Adam Wingard won't be coming back, he's busy with Godilla vs. Kong. So who will the new director be, and will they try to replicate the unique style with which the movie was directed and edited?
- Will this be a direct sequel or a new story? The story of the original ended with Light being found out as Kira, right? So what else is there to do? Does he go into hiding? How can he do that when he was in the hospital at the end of the movie?
- What about the whitewashing? Surely the response would either be just as vitriolic, or even more so, from the fans mad about that. Will they add in an asian main character aside from Light, if it's a straight sequel? People will still be mad as long as Light is white. If they do a new story will the main character of that be asian? Could this movie be inspired by the last Death Note movie that came out in Japan? Could this even be a story about a second Kira that much more closely resembles the Misa from the series, with Rem as her Shinigami, voiced by Elizabeth Debicki or somebody?

Well, I don't know if this was unexpected. I mean the movie was really bad, all the controversy about the casting aside, it was a really poor adaptation, but it seems that Netflix believes that it was a success. The only thing I hope is that they try to improve things, but that's probably not going to happen Sad
By the way, is the Sword Art Online adaptation still happening?

idk why theres complaints about whitewashing when L was black but whatever, it's an Americanised adaptation set in america so as an Asian myself i wasn't particularly fussed about it. It still wasn't a good movie but clearly garnered a lot of attention which has led to its sequel, and i remain intrigued enough to check this one out too. Hopefully they get willem dafoe back, I thought he was fantastic as ryuk and one of the few positives about the film.

It had potential but when the characters don't even resemble anything like the source material then it is just an insult.

Ryuk was cool though

I assume a sequel would follow the later Near arc of the series. I'm not sure why people are shocked by this news. The director always said he wanted to make at least two movies and the first film ended on an obvious sequel hook. Even if the movie was critically panned, they got enough viewership from hate watchers and casual fans who were curious about the film. This makes me wonder if the live action Ghost in the Shell would have done better as a Netflix original as opposed to released in theaters.

I didn't mind L's actor so focusing on him wouldn't be bad IMO.

They just need to get somebody better as Light. Keep Dafoe as Ryuk. He's significantly different than the manga/anime/live action JP movies too so it worked. He was intentionally disturbing the status quo unlike the manga version who was just bored. He was great as this version of Ryuk.

spoiler[Odds of them bringing in the Death Eraser from the pilot chapter?]

Not a Death Note fan... I did watch the movie, but only to spend time with my mom who passed away from cancer last year as she was a Death Note fan and the only thing she liked about it was Willem Dafoe. I'm glad she won't be able to see this movie.

Conversely, my best friend's fiancee who is not an anime fan did love the movie. But considering she's not an anime fan... yeah... she didn't care about everything...

All the while continuing to forget that as it’s not set in Japan or any other Asian country for that matter they don’t have to cast Asian actors or actresses in the lead roles. And if having Asian leads in an adaptation of Death Note is still that important to them the Japanese live action movies and TV Dramas are already a thing.

I'm just baffled by why they're doing it at all. Even before the cultural appropriation stuff the film commits the ultimate sin: it's boring. It's not even an amusing kind of bad, it's just dull, middling pablum with paint by numbers direction. Heck, like Ghost in the Shell before it, the whitewashing controversy was the only thing of interest.
