Wow, a weird gimmicky streaming service with an inscrutable name and no clear niche, with ludicrous amounts of money invested but not much promotion to speak of, released during a time where everyone is too stressed out over real-world chaos to try new things... ended up failing? Who could have seen that coming?

"Some More News" did a video dissecting Quibi a while back, which I guess has aged rather well, now.

It definitely had promotion. I saw TV and internet ads all the time for Quibi. Granted it was the same Jack Bauer/Ryan/old white guy Bruckheimer-esque show that I had zero interest in, but I saw the Quibi name a lot, and every time I just thought to myself how dumb of a name it is.

Honestly, I thought it was Chinese-backed with how much content it was developing. Surprising to hear it wasn't.

Honestly, this is my first time hearing about it. Never knew it was a thing until now.

I'd heard about it, just like tons of others that have popped up this year, but I never gave it a look. Between my roommate and myself, we already have CR, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and ESPN+, along with a limited version of cable via Spectrum, and I prefer longer shows anyway, so the "quick bite" offerings didn't sound appealing.

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm pretty burned out on streaming services. There's too many offers, with how much I could potentially pay in streaming services monthly, I might as well get cable TV again. Sure with Streaming, I can sub and cancel continuously, but I don't want to sit here and have to micro-manage my streaming services every month just to see all the shows I want.

So point, Quibi would've been just another service in the pool that I wouldn't give any attention to. Sorry it didn't work out for the founder, CEO and investors.

I thought this was a stupid idea the second I heard about it which was well before it launched. I just wiahed it had launched pre-covid-19 just so that its principals would have had to acknowledge it was something that cound never have worked regardless of external conditions.

It had the cool new gimmicks called "Turnover" display. The rest felt meh since the reveal, especially the 10m bites of 2h movies.

I've never heard of this service, but I have always wondered what happens to a streaming service's original content when it goes under. Does it just disappear into the void and become lost media outside people who ripped/pirated it?

Quibi could try to sell its content to other providers. Also, I think they had a ridiculously short exclusive period... I think the rights revert back to the creators in 2 years and then they can try to do something with it.

The only point of Quibi was to get around SAG pay rates by producing movies in a way they legally didn't have to call them that. It was never more than a cynical cash grab and I'm glad it failed so completely.

Man, I’m sure it was no good, but I still wanted to see what that Tomie show would’ve been like.

Was reading a bit about it. Apparently they had the bright idea to keep this as a mobile-only service without TV streaming aimed at people commuting?

Well guess what people weren't doing?

This is what bad ideas surrounded by a staff of hired yes-men gets you.

With Quibi's production model??? it would've been awful. I'd rather have a long-form show that whatever bullcrap Quibi was gonna come up with. The actress for Tomie was a pretty good choice, so I hope the show keeps going in other platform, if only for curiosity's sake.

They imagined an audience of commuters looking at their phones. Wonder where they got that idea from?

Big names behind this failure, too, like Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman.
