Why it air only one cour? Probably because Toei is busy with long-running animes like Digimon reboot, Healin' Good Precure and Dragon Quest remake. And it gets season 3 -- sounds like split cour to me.

Season 1 has more than 2 cours and used to air in the mornings but seasons 2 & 3 have only one cour and air at late night.

I guess a spit cour is better than just 12-13 episodes. I hate that it's become a trend.

I wonder how far into the manga these two seasons will get. I stopped around chapter 160~170 or so, due to the release schedule, but I wouldn't mind picking it up again via the anime

Better than ending up with filler imo

When was the last time a new season was announced before the start of the current season? And I'm not talking split cour announcement.

Probably so they can stretch it out on their own schedule and the author can actually create more content. Had it not went on hiatus for years then they'd probably be doing 2 cour seasons.

they could probably adapt the rest of the available manga in 2 cours but then they'd likely have to wait years before doing more depending on the author.

eh most shows that do this don't even need filler because they have plenty of cannon content to adapt. (for example SAO)

SAO had lots of breaks in between seasons though, right?

I'm speaking more to the shows that just air weekly for years that eventually catch up and either have to stretch out the content to slow the pace or add filler to wait for something new. Compare My Hero Academia to One Piece (though Wano seems to have been done better than recent arcs, it's approaching the current part of the manga too).

At least the anime is guaranteed to get two more cours, which should be enough to get to the end of the B-rank wars as long as each episode covers an average of 3 manga chapters.

Still, I think this is a very misleading headline. Just like I see episodes 1-73 as a single series (even though ANN's encyclopedia doesn't agree with me), I think these two new cours should count as a single season despite the break between them. I mean, no one is referring to next batch of Re:Zero episodes as "season three".

Yes but not because they ran out of material to adapt. Hell they were already rushing through and skipping a ton of the novels in the first place.

A show having filler never really bothered me, on the contrary i was glad shows like naruto and bleach had them because back then shows had a tendency to either but long running or almost never get another season. (or maybe 2 at the most)

I can always just not watch filler, can't do anything about a show not getting adapted.

hitman reborn comes to mind to me, they stopped animating and then never got another season.

One piece is definitely the exception, but it's really the only anime that could ever get away with dragging things out so much simply because of how popular it is.
