Guess I better use up that pile of gift cards I haven't used before they start closing locations...

I haven't been to a movie theater since Sicario came out in 2015. I'm done with them.

Well this would suck royally for me because out of a population 230,000 in my county we only have one full time theater which is a Regal. Granted we do have a very good Drive-In but it's only on weekends from April to the end of October. And this is a sucky Regal where most people will just drive 20 minutes into Charlotte to have a decent experience. Why no one has built another chain theater in my area (pre-pandemic) is beyond me.

I prefer to go to the independent cinemas instead of Cineworld. Or go to Shwocase as they are pretty good.

It's interesting to think about how people use to go to arcades to get the premium gaming experience, and as computer technology became cheaper and more powerful, home consoles eventually caught up to offering just as good (if not better) of an experience as the arcade. It wasn't long after this that the video game arcade began to suffer a slow death.

The movie theater was seen as offering the premium movie viewing experience for decades, and in fact if you go back far enough (back to the introduction of laser disc and VHS) the theater was seen as the only way to watch movies. Now with 4k televisions, ultra blu-ray and 4k movie streaming being the predominant and preferred ways to watch movies. It seems that the theater is bound to share the same fate as the arcade eventually.

Hopefully my local theater doesn't go under, it's an easily accessible source of anime movies.

Theaters still provide a different enough experience that they won't go away but as long as the studios keep gouging the chains on ticket prices the Theaters will always be on the brink of collapse.

This is sad. We traditionally don't go to the theatre that often (usually once a year), but it's something I've discovered I really like doing and have been 5 times this spring/summer (ours is a Regal). Especially because the home 3D market is dead & it's pretty much the one way to still see a 3D movie.

Not surprising considering the average movie goer would choose AMC instead

The last time I went to a movie theater was to watch Jackass Forever but for a while it was Shin Godzilla. No plans to watch any anime movie that's going to theaters, I'll wait until they release a DVD/Blu-ray. Unless there is a new Godzilla movie made by Toho then I'll go but other than that I'm not interested in going to movie theaters.

This is not going to be the end of Regal, though; a Chapter 11 isn't a death sentence, just a reorganization. But there will be some theaters that will stay. The one in my home state in NJ, North Brunswick, does have some sell-out screenings in advance, so it should be safe.

One big mistake Regal made was switching over to Pepsi products from Coke. While they had Coke products you had access to Cherry Coke and PibbXtra. Now with Pepsi they don't even have Wild Cherry Pepsi and because I live in the South East U.S. Coke has the distribution rights to Dr. Pepper so Pepsi literally has zero options for a Pibb/Dr. Pepper flavor drink.

Does anyone go to the movies because they carry either Coke or Pepsi? I have never opted to go to one movie theater or another because of their selection of drinks and instead selected them based on location, movie times and movie selection.

You missed my point. Movie theaters make their money from concessions. Coke products are overwhelmingly preferred to Pepsi products. While people may still go to the theater they aren't buying their normal concessions.

That sounds absolutely ridiculous. What kind of idiot would rather be thirsty than just buy the next best thing? I just take the available diet cola option, life is too short to be that picky.
