If Disney's 2019 The Lion King CG film is not counted as an animated film, then The Super Mario Bros. Movie is #3 worldwide.

I'm not sure why there's a dispute over whether The Lion King remake should count as an animated film. It is, objectively, an animated film. Despite what Disney's advertising would have you believe, the entire thing is CG animated. The cartoon animals may look realistic, but that doesn't change the fact that they're cartoons.

There is only one live-action shot in the entire movie, and the director snuck it in without Disney's permission as a joke.

So that means Mario is the #4 animated film of all time, which is still a huge accomplishment! And it's very likely that it will overtake Frozen by the time it's done, so it will probably end up at #3 (or better) anyway.

@wyvern:

Thank you! It is amazing how so many people are willing to go along with Disney's "The Lion King is live action" nonsense with as if words don't have meaning when we use them. It makes more sense to call a stop-motion animation film like the recent Netflix Pinocchio "live action" than 3-D CGI photorealism, but don't expect to see Guillermo del Toro and Netflix return their "best animated feature" Oscar for that one. Or for the MPAA to recant their rating, as no way a live action feature with that level of violence, adult themes and disturbing imagery lands a PG.

As for where Mario ends up, as of Sunday it was $35 million away from Frozen and $51 million away from $1.3 billion. It made $26 million globally last weekend and has been declining at a 30% - 40% rate, so it should surpass the former in 2 weeks, the latter in a month and be done with its box office run shortly after. That means no shot at Frozen 2, let alone The Lion King.

For the record, by inflation the top global box office-earner of any movie ever was "Gone With the Wind" followed by "Avatar".
