IMO, the decision to make an anime adaptation of Vending Machine is somewhat baffling given that Kadokawa axed the light novels some years ago. The novels only ran for 3 volumes before getting discontinued in 2017. (Fortunately the original webnovel version was written to completion; readers say the novels only adapted up to a certain portion of the WN plot for publication.)

Even more surprising is Kadokawa choosing to resurrect this IP recently, albeit for this anime and an ongoing manga adaptation.

I came into this show expecting it to be the most stupid isekai ever. BUT I WAS COMPLETELY WRONG. Vending Machine is a very sincere and often sweet anime. I am happy it was made.

Actually it wasn't really axed the novel restarted last month with another illustrator and it seems like it will continue further than the 3rd, back then around 2018, i remember reading somewhere that the previous illustrator stopped ( ? ) and it took years until they finally moved to another ( Yuuki Hagure ) . Considering that the story don't change in the restart the 2nd and 3rd might come soon enough and the long awaited 4th next year.

As a novel reader, I have been very pleased with the adaptation so far. It's condensing things a bit, but it has mostly found an excellent balance between doling out information and maintaining the flow of the storytelling. I am particularly pleased with the character design for Lammis; the novel's art portrays her as being even bustier, but this look better captures the mix of innocent charm and athleticism that I feel the author was aiming for without overemphasizing her sex appeal.

Also checked out the English dub for the first episode. Jun Fukuyama's performance as Boxxo is one that people will probably remember for years to come, but Garret Storms provides a capable English take, too, and Emily Neves makes for a fine Lammis.

This series isn't going to blow anyone away with its awesomeness, but I am glad to see that it's still being a pleasant surprise for people so far.

Well it is incredibly stupid... but the best sort of stupid, and it knows exactly what it is and does it with so much heart. Lammis and Boxxo's relationship is just adorable. The whole thing is a ray of warm sunshine.

I feel like it's gonna get a lot less interesting once Boxxo can freely communicate. They're already starting to go in that direction in episode 3.

This episode made me wonder, can Boxxo actually refund the money put into him? Or is it destroyed when converted into points?

Well we know it isn't destroyed since we saw him make change in the previous episode. I'm guessing it sits in some sort of pocket dimension until he actually spends the converted points. Pretty sure he can't outright spit out money once an item is vended, though.

He can dispense change so if someone puts a gold coin in and purchases something for one silver they will get 99 silver coins for change - but he doesn't have a cashbox that can be emptied and it's not reveled where the physical coins actually go (certainly not in the LN).

The coins add points that he uses just to stay working, so if he'd been left by the lake the points would have run out and he would have switched off - presumably dying again (so are coins his MP?) - once he gets enough point he can add functions and blessings to enhance his vending abilities..

It's actually been one of the better shows this season - I expected it to be trash but its pleasantly not bad at all.

And the female characters have been nerfed slightly for a change - Lammis is pretty busty and thicc in the Manga.

Now all we need is "reincarnated as a wand" adapting.

I thought Boxxo was famous enough that it would be hard to pass him off as your own creation. But even if not, once "putting souls into magical objects is a bad idea" was established, how was Hulemy going to explain Boxxo without making herself look evil/stupid?

I know the whole thing was just supposed to be a light-hearted side story about rival entitled kids, but what with all the lying, deception, and tortured, enslaved souls, it kinda ended up more serious than that, and not so much fun.

It's sad that the four cubs couldn't figure out Boxxo is sentient, but Lamis, who if we're being honest isn't all that bright, could figure it out on her own quickly. But maybe that's just because Lamis would readily assume anything that helps her on its own must be a "person".

I hope they don't go all the way in that direction. The most advanced that I remember him getting (as far as I got in the manga) was figuring out how to interrupt one thing he's saying with another phrase and then a long pause. It expanded his vocabulary somewhat but didn't feel too dangerous in context because it was still awkward and very limited. I'd even be nervous if he could seek to arbitrary points in them or fast forward/slow down.

That said, I was surprised to see it this early because I thought he didn't figure out how to do that until much later. It also doesn't help that they didn't explain how it worked. They didn't even localize it so he was saying a syllable from the start of one of his recordings, they just translated the word directly.

Hmm, when he thought about not acquiring telepathy, I assumed he meant him reading thoughts, not him sending out his own. If it was two way communication, I'd think he'd go for it, but one way wasn't incentive enough to overcome his fear of learning how people really felt about him. And how would telepathic abilities be received by everyone if they knew he could read their minds? That could get really awkward really fast, and people might start avoiding him for fear of what secrets he might learn about them. Just wishing for the ability to actually speak to them normally would solve most of the issues, except for the self-worth and human relationship stuff. Smile

I was chagrined that Boxxo gave up the coin for the mere promise of later payment. Exchange it when you get the cash, dude, and not before!

Guess I'm a little late to the party but stayed away because I thought similarly to how Angel M Cazares did initially, but now that I am caught up, I find it the most charming story and look forward to next week. Each new episode continues to impress with the imagination the mangaka used to set up problems and how they can be solved with only the functions of a magically enhanced machine at play. Also appreciate that the characters aren't written as imbeciles and it is interesting to see how Boxxo and them find ways to communicate within the constraints. The beast-kids actually seemed to me somewhat realistic to the average level of problem-solving for that age, so I don't think less of them and two of them at least were developing the correct conclusions.

And now Ep8 introduces the BIG dilemma of whether being a magically powered and powerful machine or a simple, ordinary non-magical human is better. For the narrative's sake I vote to remain a vending machine but it seems like a depressing outcome relative to being able to have a deeper first-hand relationship with Lamis. Telepathy can be fraught so that is also a tough choice, but it is nice to see the story not shying away from larger issues that add interest and develop the dimensionality of the characters. Really interested to see how the story plays out.

Also love the VAs

Ep9: As if there weren't enough to love about this show, we get a representation of a neuro-divergent person in an accurate and not derogatory light.
