Wild. Are these figures generally inflation-adjusted? A bit surprised that the top two are both relatively recent movies, although maybe that also reflects general world-wide economic growth and people having more disposable income on average, as well as continued post-COVID splurging, or something.

Barbie never needed some meme. It was always going to make bank, it's Barbie. It's just good that it was actually a great movie about stuff which is what continually drew people in.

This is just a guess, but maybe you are thinking this is about all-time film earnings? This article is just talking about film grosses this year.

If you are talking about all-time worldwide earnings, Mario is 15th and Barbie is (currently) 18th: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/top_lifetime_gross/?area=XWW

Domestically, Barbie is 14th of all time and Mario is 15th:

Crystalyn -- oh, thanks for correcting me. Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking, and that correction makes sense; I didn't think about it or read very carefully, in this case Shocked

I know Barbie is a popular toy brand and all, but I don't really see how people could anticipate it being such a success. Well, I guess The Lego Movie was huge too so there's precedent for that. But all I know about the movie is it's about wearing pink and people really like Ken and "I'm Kenough" and all the Ryan Gosland memes.

Because they saw the adverts. There was a very strong marketing push, and a lot of people really enjoyed the humor displayed, the aesthetic, etc. This was months before the Barbenheimer meme started, and Barbie was generating a lot of hype on its own.

If anything, I'd say Oppenheimer was helped by the Barbenheimer meme. I have no doubt it would have done well on its own, but in my limited social circles I've not heard anyone talking about or hyping Oppenheimer without it being connected to the meme, which was incidentally the first time I heard of it at all.

And then you have Morbius which did the same thing and nobody ended up showing up in theaters for it.

A major difference being that the Barbenheimer meme started in the weeks before the two movies' releases and already having people planning a movie on the weekend probably made them more likely to plan for a double feature or at least made them think about seeing the other. Morbius became a meme around the time of its release for being...absolutely terrible.

That said, people did show up in theaters. Eddie Burbach went to see the movie five days in a row. ...He, um...he might need an intervention.
