This is a questionable decision. Why not just focus on the books the anime didn't already cover?

Considering it's been awhile since we got the films, and the anime hasn't continued for acwhile either, my thoughts are that this might be a means to quickly drum up support for the novels or, for the sake of plausibility, a new season of the anime. Would be nice, at least.

Would it be considered a new license? If so I wonder if CR can get it so they can bring it to more countries, since most don't have the original movies available.

Even better question is when/if Kodansha starts publishing the light novel again after they acquired Vertical. Until then I won't be buying anything from them, manga OR novels..

While I agree it's better to adapt what hasn't already, I'm actually in favor of the decision. My biggest gripe with the trilogy is that fact that it was a trilogy and not a single movie. Each part felt like I was watching a single act of a 3-hour movie, with no singular part fulfilling nor telling a complete story on its own. Having them combined and edited down to 2 hours and 30 minutes or so will tighten up the pacing and could greatly enhance the story.

I wonder if they'll release the compilation film in the West as well?
