Oh, damn. I wasn't aware Urasawa's stuff was finally available digitally. Gonna have to pick up some stuff asap.
As for the rest, I've nothing to add. Pluto is absolutely brilliant, and precisely the kind of adaptation -- or anime more generally -- I wish we'd get more of. |

Wow, I can't believe the lack of comments here... we get the best series in the last 10 years and nobody is saying anything?? Really??
Anyways, here're my thoughts after finishing the whole thing. Pluto is not only the best series of 2023 (not that it was too difficult, to be honest) but the best series I've watched in the last 10 years (pretty much since Shin Sekai Yori). It is not as pitch-perfect as Monster was but it was really impossible to compete with 74 episodes (even if Pluto's manga is shorter, I do feel that this adaptation could have reach my top 5 ever if it had been given a few more episodes to help explain some stuff that felt rushed). Also, I do feel that while Yugo Kanno's soundtrack fit perfectly the series it didn't reach the otherwordly level of Kuniaki Haishima's soundtrack for Monster. But despite these minor complaints, this has been a hell of a ride and some scenes (particularly the ending of episode 6 and Atom's and Helena encounter at the end of the series) will forever be stuck in my brain as some of the best, most powerful scenes in anime history. All I have to say is thank you Masao Maruyama for making this masterpiece a reality and thank you Netflix because there's no way in hell we would have ever got this without them. |

BobSamaria recommends watching select parts of Astro Boy first to properly understand Pluto. To anyone who has seen it but not Astro Boy, would you say that holds true?. I kind of want to know before jumping in.

I have not seen either anime, but I have read the original Pluto. After doing so, I sought out the Astro Boy manga storyline that inspired it and read that too. That said, having the additional context of Pluto's source of inspiration gave me a deeper, more well-rounded appreciation for the newer work, but it wasn't absolutely necessary. I suspect the same is true of the anime adaptations. |

It's 8 hours long and some folks want to take their time and enjoy it before reading someone else's review of it? Others are talking about it in the main review thread as Lynzee covers each episode. No need to be an elitist/gatekeep-y weirdo about how fast you consume media.

Looking forward to finally checking it out. I managed to read a few of the original manga volumes, but it didn't stick in my mind.
Considering the praise for this adaptation, I think I'll try watching it together with a few non-anime casuals. I'm doing my part! |
