A very awesome announcement to see, & the more subdued way it was announced at Anime NYC (D&Q giving out info postcards) was neat. Unfortunately, D&Q really messed up said info cards, as they had some shockingly poor historical info, namely in saying that this was the first time that Sanpei Shirato ever has been published in English (ignoring Viz's release of Kamui Gaiden) & that Go Nagai was the founder of Garo magazine (when D&Q meant to say Katsuichi Nagai, who wasn't even the founder of Garo, but the co-founder of publisher Seirindo).

Then there's that ICv2 article, which quotes D&Q's executive editor as saying that Kamui-den is "the last great comics epic that hadn’t been published in English", which is so utterly & absurdly wrong that I'm amazed that someone from D&Q actually said that. I am looking forward to Legend of Kamuy's release, but I was very disappointed in how botched D&Q handled the historical aspects of this announcement, as they're usually really about that.

This is an incredible license, and it's not surprising to see that it's D+Q who picked it up, considering how much other stuff from Garo they've released.

The promotional materials and interview that Lord Geo referred to, though... yeesh. I would've expect a bit more rigor from them. The "last great comics epic" bit sounds like your standard over-the-top marketing hyperbole, but the rest is pretty bad. I will admit, though, the idea of Go Nagai as the founder of Garo is legit hilarious.

The accompanying announcement stuff is concerning, but I am super excited for this release and will be for sure picking this up ASAP.

The 80 sequels are better but you have to start at the start.

I know the Kamuy spelling is more accurate to the Ainu pronunciation for whatever reason, but is it still applicable when it's a person's name and not the Ainu concept?

Admittedly, I'm new to diving into the deep end of the manga pool, but even as an American comics collector since 1980, I know that The Legend of Kamui was one of Viz's first manga releases (alongside Area 88 and Mai the Psychic Girl) -- in flipped American floppy comics format yet! -- when Eclipse published them for Viz back when the latter was first starting out in the mid-80's.

Drawn & Quarterly, as one of the art-house publishers, should know better.
