I guess they forgot about that R. Crumb book which covered the same idea. Or is this manga more PC?

If you think R. Crumb Draws The Blues "covered the same idea" as Me And The Devil Blues, I can only presume you haven't actually read either of them.

I've not read the Robert Crumb book, but wasn't it just a single volume? I think this manga series probably covers his life more in depth, although much of the story consists of legend since that's all there is to go on. It does seem to cover as much of the factual material about Johnson that there is though.
But the story itself reads like supernatural/horror manga IMO, and uses a very dark, gothic Old South background to explore the social problems of the era. Some of the story centered on racism is quite sickening. So it probably is more PC, considering Crumb, and considering the subjects it tackles. But it's not sanitized by any means. |

Heh,
I was so surprised when I recommended this book to my local library, and it was on the shelves within 2 weeks (takes a week to ship to NZ from the US). It must have been on the librarians' "hot-item" news grapevine for a while. Wish Del Rey printed the colour pages though

Interesting choice, in a positive way - good job Library Journal!
I agree with Sunflower - it's not sanitized, which is not so pleasant but necessary sometimes. |

I am pleased. I am a Blues Man at heart, so RJ is on the top of my list of Blues Guitarists. And Me and the Devil Blues is one of my favorite, if not my favorite recent Manga, followed close by Black Lagoon. I love how Akira introduces Clyde Burrow. Me and the Devil Blues also happens to be my favorite RJ song, so it's all good. I liked the letter that the lead singer/guitarist of Sheena and the Rokkets wrote. The band played with Wilko Johnson of Dr. Feelgood fame (The Pub Rock band, not the crappy song by Motley Crue), so I knew that they liked good music.
This is a must buy manga, and I cannot wait for Volume 2. If only we could send Eric Clapton a copy. |

Well deserved recommendation. I purchased Vol 1 of MatDB, and it seems like the kind of manga more people should be reading.
I'm glad Del Ray are releasing this manga, and I hope it paves the way for similar good but mature kinds of story. this is really the only way we'll ever get anyone else to I'd so love for Del Ray to release Kawaguchi's A Spirit of the Sun. |
