Yeah, I was really disappointed with the way this omnibus "ended." Good thing the light novels are getting re-published.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why the manga got canceled in Japan? Was it due to lack of popularity or something?

Yes, it is disappointing but at the time that was the end of that chapter, or volume with more to follow. But none ever did, which is a shame. I still appreciate Seven Seas releasing the Omnibus with that extra content. Thanks guys! |

A parody is technically what it is--just ask Erica Friedman of Okazu. Of course, that's not a criticism.
Just as it's a parody, the point of Strawberry Panic is that it's also a fantasy, even more so than Maria Watches Over Us. It's a Yuri fantasy, for those who feel that the presence of men takes away the entertainment value and the focus on girl/girl romance, or at least that's my own impression. That's basically Strawberry Panic's purpose, being the ultimate Yuri schoolgirl fantasy series, and so long as one isn't expecting an emotional masterpiece I also feel that it's done well. Just one thing about the manga version that I couldn't not roll my eyes at. spoiler[ Nagisa, Hikari and all those girls are atop the tower. Nagisa loses her balance, falls over, and hangs onto the ledge by her fingers. Hikari stands there agape in fear of Nagisa's situation. You can't not laugh when the manga-ka shows in clear view of Hikari standing atop the ledge, just a couple inches away from where Nagisa is hanging, and yet suggest there's no way Hikari could possibly reach to grab a hold of Nagisa's arm] Other than that, enjoyed this manga just like I loved the Anime, and am looking forward to Seven Seas releasing the complete novel omnibus. |

The artist had a nervous breakdown, if the rumors are to be believed. There was talk of the series continuing (possibly with a new artist), but it never happened. |

Isn't the novel incomplete (in English) as well? I have the first two volumes, but the third was never released by Seven Seas in English as far as I know ... which made me really sad, since I wanted to know how the story concluded.
In the novels, they make a point of discussing how these girls are in this school cut off from society in order for them to learn in a better environment or something ... which at least explains the total lack of men. Also in the anime version (and maybe also the novel) the one character is supposedly engaged (pre-arranged marriage) to a man, so that is one small acknowledgment of men! |

And this is why I honestly couldn't get into the series at all. I mean, MariMite has a similar all-girl school, everyone-is-cool-with-this premise, but it acknowledges the existence of boys, and there's a real diversity among the female relationships (some romantic, some BFFs, some familial). Strawberry Panic was just... girls falling over each other with no thought of anything beyond it. Maybe it's supposed to be parody, but if so it wasn't very funny. My favorite yuri tends to be the type that really examines the relationships between women and social understanding of how that should work. So maybe I'm just too much of a snob to appreciate Strawberry Panic.

As far as I understand, it's a parody without it so much as being written as directly a comedy. |

It's most definitely a stealth parody in my opinion, which is part of why I enjoy this series so much. That being said, I really liked the manga and light novel versions & plan to buy the manga omnibus edition when I have the time/money. The cover is quite adorable~ |

Remember when this was supposed to be the flagship of the Strawberry line? And then it didn't come out for months after the start of said line? Fun times. I bought the first volume, but wasn't able to get the second one.
I was fine with the uncompleted-story angle. From what I gathered from perusing the omnibus in the store, there's at least a volume end to it. Obviously not closure, but I'd deal. But when I read this:
And I'm not going to read the novels, since what's the point of reading a comic without pictures? Especially one like this. |

If I remember correctly, Strawberry Panic's manga release date was pushed back to December 2007 because the novel had been delayed from it's earlier March 2007 date due to a lack of bookstore support. With us switching distribution to Tor/Macmillan that coming March 2008, we decided to move the novel to March 2008 and have the manga to be a prelude to it by coming out December 2007 for the Christmas season. |
