I assume that the near-doubling of earnings in recent quarters can be attributed to the Holiday Shopping season?

I'm curious how they're announcing financials for Q3 of FY2011.
That's some damn impressive work to be able to pull that one out. (yes, I know it's a typo... just having fun, especially since the feed just copied it everywhere) OTOH, it doesn't sound like Navarre is giving FUNI any love. Based on past financials, they've done very well for the company and even now, their income compared to the rest of the company isn't bad (for this quarter it was more than 50% of the rest of the company as a whole... Navarre still has several lines of business the last time I checked). Unless there is a serious debt issue (which it doesn't seem like based on the financials I quickly browsed through), I'm convinced that this is a bad long-term move for NAVR. PS: guys, the financial are as of 9/30/2010. Unless they're using a very wacky calendar to account for their finanancials, the holiday season was not accounted for in this statement. |

The key term is "FY" or fiscal year. The fiscal years of different companies are not necessarily the same as the conventional calendar year. Navarre's 2011 fiscal year will end in March 31, not December 31 of the 2011 calendar year.
The third quarter of Navarre's 2011 fiscal year ended on December 31. Again, this is Navarre's fiscal year, not the conventional calendar year. |

I really don't know how it works but "discontinued operations" income probably includes income generated by operations other than Funimation. Such as Mill Creek Entertainment acquiring the rights to Crown International films, previously held by their shuttered BCI Home Entertainment division.

If Navarre does throw in the towel with respect to trying to sell Funimation, I'm not sure if that will be a good thing or bad thing. On the one hand, I liked the way Funi was operating within Navarre, but in terms of long term, is it a good thing to be owned by a business that doesn't consider yours to be in their area of core competency? Mind you, the fact that Funi is contributing in a positive way to Navarre's bottom line might mean that Navarre takes a renewed interest.
Oh well. Not a friggin' thing I can do about it except sit on the sidelines and see how it all shakes out. |

considering how funi's pushed back so many release dates recently, i was beginning to suspect bandai had bought them. happy to see that's unfounded.

I'm not sure if this is good news or bad news. Nobody wants to buy them but they doubled their income, although mentioning income with no mention of profit from that income always makes me put on my skepticism hat and wonder if there's actually a rose there or if they're just painting a rosy picture.

Funimation is just about the only major anime dubbing and distribution company left. If they can't profit now then I don't think they ever will. At least not with their current business model.

It should be rather apparent as to why no one wants to buy Funimation
1) It's target audience is very few 2) The entertainment industry is already performing poorly overall, especially with everything becoming more digital as well as Netflix eating up all the rental portions and generating profit. 3) The future of the anime industry overall looks grim at the moment creating an even lesser incentive to invest in such a company All in all, this could be potentially be bad news for Funimation depending on what Navarre plans to do should Funimation not be sold. However, I doubt this will be the case. I can't imagine Funimation's profit being all that great in the last quarter. It was probably an overall profit, but the advertising of Summer Wars must have generated a loss since it was almost a last minute act on their part. As a result, Navarre may see this as a potential reason to shut down Funimation depending on how they perform next quarter. No, make that +2 persons:
Discontinued operations is 100% Funimation. Navarre separated it out from the rest of Operations because of the possible sale. |

I guess this means i won't be seeing the rest of Hellsing Ultimate with the original English cast. Plus, no more of Funi's awesome anime on Netflix.
