The Toronto Comic Arts Festival actually occurred during May.
The man is a machine, I gotta say. I imagine there would be slight inconsistencies between the two versions, since he's drawing the same thing twice. I'm glad I got my books autographed by him. |

It's great that he's trying to get his new stuff overseas, but I really really want "The Music of Marie" to get licensed. That manga was absolutely amazing, and has forever made me a fan of his work.

I can't really blame him for trying to get more attention outside of Japan, like before Genkaku Picasso and Light Club he had only two or three things released in the US, and besides Short Cuts it was just one-shot style stories for anthology collections.
Some of his stuff is kind of hit-or-miss, but when he does something good it's absolutely fantastic. He'd probably be really popular in France along with Araki and Maruo. |

There is valid reason for it. When an image is flipped, there is tendency where it ruins the composition and panel-to-panel continuity. This is why many manga artists don't like flips because it creates bad composition which brings confusion to readers. Good example: In a baseball manga, let's say that a hitter is at the 1st base from perspective of the catcher. If that image is flipped, the hitter will be at the 3rd base. Is it really worth it, though? I always question the flipping, especially with Vertical. I mean, aside from non-manga readers, the only other people I could imagine reading Furuya are indie comics fans. And I would think they're at least familiar enough with manga to know about the R to L thing and not be put off by it. I don't think flipping it would sway them so significantly. The same goes for Vertical's Tezuka stuff...anyone who's gonna buy Tezuka is probably already aware of who Tezuka is and what manga is. I just don't see that kind of stuff reaching a new audience because it's flipped, though I can see why it would work with something like Chi's Sweet Home which has plenty of potential with kids and non-manga readers.
I feel like I might have heard or read Ed Chavez saying that their flipped books do sell better, but I could be wrong. Either way, I can't wait to see Furuya's take on the book. |

Personally, reading manga left to right annoys me.
Just draw it once and let the translators leave it in it's natural right-to-left format, please... Less work for the author, more natural to read for the reader. |

That's absolutely amazing. Even if I haven't cared for his works so far I can happily bow my head in recognition of this man's work ethic and determination, as well as his drive to appeal to a global audience.

I hate to say it, but I think this is a waste of his talent.
He could be spending the time he takes doing these redrawings in creating more original works. All this is doing is lowering his creative output in a misguided attempt to make his works more appealing to the west. Here's a better idea for that: Leave it right to left, but hire a translator/writer who you work with closely to provide a fully localized version. You spend less of your precious time, and end up with a product ready to go for publication in the west (and thus, ripe picking for licensing). |

While I wouldn't fault anyone for assuming as such, nothing in the article or tweets says which version Vertical will be releasing. Unflipped or ... umm, also unflipped. I guess we will find out at the end of the year which they think sells better. |
