Darn it no dubbed! That always lowers my score on anime. I buy anime for both Japanese and English, if I don't like english put on Japanese or vise versa. I guess I'll just watch it online some where and spend my money else where.

This series has been sitting on my list since I registered at Crunchyroll. Yet every time I looked at the image and read the small description, it just never sold itself enough to get me to start the first episode, let alone the entire series.
This issue will be rectified this weekend. It'll be a change against all the "stripes" I've been seeing lately and I'm not talking about other military insignia here. |

That's quite a shame that the anime doesn't provide an English Dub..I'm starting to wonder when the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood part five review will be up?It seems like they are running late with the review.

I just watched episode 7.5 last night, and thought it was by far the funniest episode of the show. A bit edgy, yes, but so damn funny.

A few titles released over the summer got backlogged for various reasons and we're just starting to get caught up on them now. This series was one of them; Baka and Test (which I'm working on right now) is another. The fifth and final FMA:B should also be in that group. Unfortunately it's the nature of the beast that preview copies, if they're available at all, aren't always available in a timely fashion. As for the issue of it not getting dubbed: I don't understand why anyone should be surprised or disappointed by this. Even by Crunchyroll standards, this was a fringe title. That it got licensed and released on DVD at all was unexpected. |

Nice review! Hits all the strong points, with fair mention of the show's flaws, especially regarding some of the choices around the last few episodes. Honestly a bit surprised there was no jab at the gotta go pee episode, but anyway.

I think I only had two real complaints about the Nozomi release. The first was that all of Aisha's German dialog was translated into English. I mean, she was an outsider speaking a language that neither the onscreen characters nor the majority of the viewers were meant to understand. And when she did have something relevant to say, another character was always around to conveniently translate it to French (well, Japanese), resulting in most of the subtitled lines being repeated. Nozomi enclosed all the German subs in brackets, but still, an option to watch without would have been appreciated. If memory serves, CR translated the German as well, save without brackets, so maybe it was part of some mandate from Japan.
Aside from that, I just wish Nozomi could have given us an option to buy on BD. It looks fine for DVD, but the show was clearly made to be watched in HD. The credits in the OP and ED, for example, are just a blurry mess in SD. If Right Stuf gets to a point where BD becomes feasible, I hope we see a re-release. On the plus side, the honorifics track was a nice bonus for those who care about them. Giving viewers a choice to watch with or without presumably made everyone happy. |

Very nice review. Sound of the Sky (which I still think of as "So Ra No Wo To" with its pretentious, individual kanji style...) is one of my favorite shows, and one of the few that I ever pre-ordered so I got it as soon as it was released. (Actually, RightStuf delivered it BEFORE the release date! That is the advantage of being the marketing arm of the publisher, I guess...) I just wish they would have put it out on BluRay! The art deserves it!
I am one of those rare people that loved the original series climax (episodes 10-12), though I did feel it was a bit rushed. What the show really needed was about 6 to 9 more episodes to fully develop the scenario. spoiler[Kanata's "Radar O'Reilly"-esq hearing is a point that seem to have been too subtle for some. (I remember reading one comment that somebody figured out that Rio played the "Cease Fire" signal for her at a great distance, which is what sent the squad into action, only after watching it multiple times.) (If you don't know who Radar O'Reilly is, it is a M*A*S*H character. I'm old...)] It may also have something to do with my affection for Amazing Grace, too... There was a very extensive discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the show in the "talkback" comments from Erin's Shelf Life review. I will let the curious delve into that can of worms on their own... I agree that the bonus episode at the end is one of the finest in the series, highlighting the main themes of optimism and innocence amidst a background of pervasive sadness and decay. More importantly, it leaves the door wide open for a sequel, but I doubt that will happen. (Does anyone know what the Japanese DVD sales figures were like for the show? If it sold enough, they might dip back into the well again...) The other bonus episode is deathly funny, but also highly inappropriate. I haven't let my kids watch it yet... |

Another big-time, vital reason to not be surprised about Sound of the Sky not having a dub is because this was licensed by Nozomi--they've long stopped dubbing their own shows since The Third. Still, it would've been nice if it did, because this was an exceptionally good show. There was no doubt to me that the moe-designs of the characters were merely a draw-in for viewers before getting surprised by it later, as I was.
Although I liked the paintball-war part of episode 7.5, I still thought everything else about it was overall way too silly and pandering to the otaku audience, even compared to the rest of the series. On the other hand, it's no surprise that DVD-only episodes tend to be wilder in content. Most fortunately they don't take the same route with the very last (bonus) episode. I can see why some may think the TV series's ending was oversimplified, but I thought it was a terrific ending. But as terrific as it was, the final episode just blew it out of the water for me. One, all the girls think of their futures, and except for one none of them involves getting married and settling down, which is a huge change in pace for a moe series that was targeted to a male otaku audience. This was one show where the female characters flat out stated they wanted to live independent lifestyles. And two, what really did it for me was seeing how strong Kanata and Rio's bond/companionship was, beautifully summed up from their gradual relationship over the storyline prior and spoiler[how they are always going to fight beside each other, even as we're given the greatest tinge of melancholy when Rio tells Kanata that the planet's going to die out with no real way of stopping it]. I am surprised that this was actually a problem to figure out for some people. I thought that was very obvious. (And no, you are not the only one who thought of spoiler[Radar O'Reilly] upon seeing that scene. . .)
See, this kind of comment is the reason why I am starting to get just as irritated with this new breed of "no dub, no watch/buy" fans as I do with sub purists - and I'm saying that as someone who normally watches dubbed versions if he has a choice about it. It would be nice to have an occasional response thread about a subbed-only release where no one felt the need to speak up and be an ass about this. |

I just wish they had more episodes that were close to Felicia's past and less that were sitting by a telephone trying not to pee.
That said, I bought the set (omfg that art on the box is gorgeous) anyway. It makes good scenery porn if nothing else. But yeah, I would have really welcomed more stuff like Felicia's past. |

For some additional information: As a Mexican, I don't care if a movie is subbed or dubbed (althrough I prefer to watch a movie or series dubbed since I wear glasses) but I'm very aware that in the U.S., people prefers dubs over subs, and my statement was from an American POV, not a foreign one. |
