Awesome Viz! I knew this was gonna happen the second I heard Bleach, One Piece, and Naruto were all going back to bimonthly schedules. Hope this goes well for them.

Each new digital issue of WEEKLY SJ ALPHA brings manga fans in North America the latest chapters of their favorite series only two weeks after it debuts in Japan's massively popular WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP Magazine.

Then it's not a simultaneous release, is it?

That being said, discounting the fact that you'd have to pay for the service, it's going to fail. The majority of fans are not going to wait two weeks to *pay* to read anything they can find on scanlation sites for free, and sometimes within 48 hours of the manga's release in Japan.

Note to the SJ people - If you want to successfully combat scanlation sites, why not try talking to the people that do the translations and hire them to do it for you and host it on your official site? While there will still be someone out there that will translate it just because they can, I think a lot more people would be willing to read it on your official site (and hence give you ad revenue) provided you can get the translations up on your site within 72 hours of its initial release. Otherwise, you'll be back to square one.

Well to be honest I'm not sure how I feel about this. I think I am one of the few people who is far behind on the manga of Bleach and Naruto and the current SJ is in the right place for me, so suddenly jumping ahead will be a little annoying, but it sounds like it will be better then when Yen+ went to an online only model (and lost all the manga that I subscribed for in the first place).

But hopefully in the long run it will be better for Viz and the fans.

No, but that's why it says a near-simultaneous release.

The fact of the matter is that you're not going to be able to bring the people who read the scanlations over anyway - they get the manga chapters several days before they release in Japan. There's no way to match that unless they started releasing manga chapters to the US first which would never happen for obvious reasons.

It's POSSIBLE (actually, I'd say PROBABLE) that the delay is because of the Japanese licenser saying the English release must wait 2 weeks so the phonebooks can sell in Japan. I'm not saying that's GOOD for business in the US, I'm just saying that's likely the reason.

That said, I agree that the 2 week delay is a big issue if it's online/web based only (4 week rental). If people are going to read on their computer, then why not go to scanlation if it's ready 2 weeks faster. At least when it's books you have people that claim they don't want to read manga on computer screen (altho you ALSO have larger publication cost). I think tablets/eReaders make this a more viable distribution system, but I also think "online only" is a major negative.

I am not a fan of digital over print. I never liked it and never will. Things crash and you control what you have in your hand more then on digital device. Epic fail Viz. Epic fail.
