This is where it all starts going to hell. Soon people will be marrying their mounts and then their weapons and society will fall apart.
I'm glad Square finally addressed this. It's becoming tiring to hear people argue about something that doesn't affect their lives. As long as someone's behavior is consensual and doesn't affect the rest of the people in society then others shouldn't be concerned about it. The resistance to homosexuality is insulting to human progress. |

Damn. I want this game even more. Even if I know I'll get bored when it comes to farming, that I will have no friends in it, and that I will never get to use the option for relationships.
I'm wayy too much not social for that, even more in mmorpg. I just can't deny that I'd love to have a cute boyfriend in a game, and also in real-life. |

It kinda was silly that they not allow it anyway. There are probably a HUGE number of cases of real-life boyfriend/girlfriend//husband/wife who may play as the same gender in-game and want to marry their characters in-game to be just as connected in that realm as in real life.

Call me a skeptic, when I think this change has nothing to do with social changes or acceptance but purely a business decision maybe because the majority tend to pick female characters. Maybe if they lock in gender base on players id I would think differently.

It has always been about business at the end of the day. It's much easier to program marriage variables into an MMO since the marriage is in name only in these kinds of games. No resources would be spent accommodating for homosexual couples over traditional couples It's not like a normal game like when people who complained about Tomodachi Life where the entire game revolves around the gender of the people you marry which can lead to things like having children and families and other factors. Marriage in MMOs don't have those factors so it's much easier to implement. The more simpler a game is, the easier it is to plug in variables. Look at Skyrim, every NPC you could marry was a blank slate. You could marry someone you just met because there was no relationship system in that game. They all said the same thing, nothing was unique between men and women. It was an incredibly simple and shallow system. The only way to have children was adopt because it'd take a lot more effort to program the ability to have a child with the opposite sex and then have to find a way to have a baby with a same sex partner if the player chose to go that route. Another example is the Sims. It allows gay marriages, but the only way to have a child is to adopt. Numerous people have complained over the years about that and wanted them to implement a way to have a genetic child, such as implementing artificial insemination. EA said that is too sensitive of a subject to delve into, and maybe it is, but another factor is the time and resources it would take to implement that into a game. Changing a variable which allows two people to marry is one thing, but to implement an entire system for them to have genetic children is another. They have to look at the time invested VS the rewards. The more simple/basic a marriage system is, the more likely it is to accommodate for non traditional marriages and traditions. If most companies have to actually program all those different variables in a more complex game, some companies might not find it worth the time to do all of that if they feel not enough people are going to care about it to make a return on the resources it would take to create it. These decisions are based on business factors, not pushing some gay or anti-gay agenda like people try to make it out to be. Businesses would capitalize on it if they felt it would make them money, but that means they would ignore something if they felt it would lose them money. |

Kind of ironic since homosexuality literally puts a stop to human progress (without artificial means). I'm not disagreeing with you, I just found it a little funny. |

Excalibur seems to have a lot of really nice people to play with. Only problem it's really popular so they only allow new characters at like 3 AM or so. Square did however just announce a new server technology that allows them to run entire worlds a single supercomputer instead of a server farm. I'm really curious to see if they make use of that in FFXIV eventually since obviously something like that would benefit an MMO more than a single player game. I always find that less servers in MMOs are better for everyone |
