Continues to be an interesting man. Still kicking, at least. Hopefully Ghibli will not simply fade away. In the interest of hand drawn animation, the medium can still serve as a cornerstone for art itself and the direct interpretation of what the eye sees and experiences in motion.

Miyazaki always seems to have unique opinions on everything, so it's always nice to know what he's thinking. And good on him for doing his 'self indulgent animation' without stopping. If you love something, why would you want to retire?

Strange, though, how he said cell-animation is dying. I'd say it's actually at an all time high. Well, the exception is western films for kids (I'm looking at you, Disney and Dreamworks). Although I can only 3D animate and I can't draw to save my life, I still agree with him about which is better. So far, unless the whole thing is done in CGI, it looks weird. The only good shows to use a mix of the two are few in number. Any Ghibli film is on the list, because you can never tell, and things like Suisei No Gargantia, Shingeki No Bahamut: Genisis and a few others seem to do it okay.

I'll give him credit for being dedicated and I agree with regards to hand drawn animation. But I still don't like his works nor do I like his arrogance and attitude towards other anime and manga writers/artists.

Meh, well everyone's entitled to their opinion, arrogant or not, and no one's the perfect messiah of animation. And you have a right to not like his films. Which ones have you seen, might I ask? And why didn't you like them?

It sounds like the guy really just wants to make shit without all of the financial and professional obligations of mounting a feature length movie production or managing a giant multimillion dollar entertainment enterprise. He'd probably still do features if the business of feature filmmaking hadn't become as complex as it is today. I just hope to get a chance to see his shorts some day, either at the museum or through some wider release.

Note that this is also the guy that thinks Cowboy Bebop is only "okay." I think I can come to the conclusion that I do not share his opinions generally. Besides, it seems to be a trend to not like Miyazaki's works on ANN forums. Cause you know, everyone's gotta be different and outside of the mainstream. All I know is, so far Miyazaki and Ghibli movies are some of the only anime that I've shown to others that every non anime fan I know actually likes. My sister even loves Howl's Moving Castle. It became one of her favorite films. It just has that classic style that seems to transcend cultures. Not to say that Ghibli films are the only accessible ones though. She also really likes Wolf Children.

And Miyazaki and Lasseter's relationship is just too cute. That whole train bit put a big smile on my face. They both really are just grown up children.

Maybe since that will be his only form of directing from now on, Disney or some other distributor in the US will release a short films collection. I would love to own On Your Mark and Mei and the Kittenbus in HD.
