Is there a related cause known for the exact opposite scenario?

Not a subscriber. Not using HTTPS everywhere (or any other new plugins.) Still getting logged-out all the bloody time, without the browser crashing, for the last week or so. Quite a few more out-of-bounds security warnings from IE11 too, but that's been happening on so many sites I just figured it was a more twitchy default out of patch-Tuesday and/or the ad-swappers.

Didn't know you guys even had an SSL cert. Is there some reason it just isn't forced by default?
