Starting the story over seemed unnecessary and created the impression that the series might be accessible to newcomers. With the first episode essentially being a less impressive version of the original anime's premiere, it seemed like the intent may have been to attract new interest. Which is strange, since viewers had to be familiar with the franchise to understand the rest of the series.

One thing I'll give Golden - the first few episodes inspired me to binge watch its predecessor. Basically, I liked what I saw enough to want to form a better understanding of it. Despite being a big fan of the Arena games, I've never played the actual P4, so my knowledge of the franchise was fairly limited going in.

I'm partially disappointed that they didn't dub Golden since I prefer the dub far more than I do the sub and was willing to give the anime a second watch through if it were dubbed. This may be frank and harsh, but every time I hear Teddie's Japanese voice I cringe and while Rie Kugimiya may be the better singer, Laura Bailey's Rise isn't as grating on the ears. Plus the characters just sound more like fun loving teenagers to me, especially Yuri as Yosuke.

However I also get why they didn't since Golden's anime was pretty boring and/or wasn't very well liked, unless you liked Marie. She gets pretty involved with everything the characters do and significant plotlines were extremely minimized. I guess investing extra money for a good dub of an already expensive series that not even most of the westerns fans (aka the primary demographic) liked isn't a good business plan.

I find Marie to be okay character wise, but she felt a little too tacked on in the game for me to appreciate her completely. Like she doesn't fit in with the rest of the story (despite being part of the big twist) unless you actively pursue her. If you don't even bother with her Social Link, then she's just there and that's it.

I'll only say this: I love Marie's character design. Everything about it. It's just so... eye-catching. Smile But am I willing to watch this, without the English voices I know and love, just for her? No. No, not really. Sad

Hmm, so if I played and loved the original, but haven't played Golden, this is a reasonable alternative to playing through Golden?

Well some of the biggest additions to Golden were Marie and Adachi's SL, which are played up immensely in this anime. So I guess if you want a long and diet version of those then yeah. How you like it will really depend on how you feel about Marie, since after Narukami she gets the most focus and thus is played up much more than she is in game, and is his designated love interest in a way.

I seriously hope there aren't people going out and buying this instead of playing the actual game. I'm usually the first to jump to Aniplex's defence but I bought the game, which contains the pure unfiltered 75 hour experience, for $30 as an impulse buy when I first got my PSVita because I didn't want to play Killzone. So this is kind of ridiculous.

Buying a Vita with P4 Golden actually works out to be cheaper than buying both this and Sentai's release of the original adaptation.

No English dub makes it less likely that I'll ever get around to watching it even though I am a huge fan of the game. Then again, it seems that might be for the better. Maybe all the bad things I've heard about the series have played a part in Aniplex's decision to not dub it.

Still, It's kind of weird how we've transitioned from dubbed only to subbed only.

Rather disappointed at the lack of a dub. As a huge Persona fan I would've gladly payed the high entry price for these sets. But if I have to watch it subbed, I might as well save my money and watch it free on Crunchyroll.

The only reason I see people wanting to watch this is if they're a Marie fan. Because there's a lot of Marie moments in this that aren't in the game, spoiler[Marie visiting the beach, Marie in a band, and she even got her own Persona.] If you want to learn everything else, just play the game, you won't regret it.

I was actually debating on buying this when I assumed Sentai would get it and dub it.

I love Persona , but having played through Golden almost 4 times, (regular P4 six times),there was lititle of interest to me. The shrink-wrap is still on my P4 dad's of the first series. I thought the Adachi soul link was handled better in this anime, but so much else is better served playing the game.

Aniplex made my decision to pass easy.

I am looking forward to buying the next P3 movie, those have been great.

Coming from a Persona fan who thought the first anime was ok, this was just really bad, boring, disjointed, unnecessary. It kind of started promising, with the potential to explore a new game+ Narukami, but quickly fell apart.
And Marie isn't even a compelling character, especially compared to the original cast, so seeing everyone and everything being all about Marie can be...not so much interesting if one's not a superfan of her, to say the least.

Now how can you get a C in animation. I'd say the animation is quite good. I guess it's the fact that it looks more flatter when compared to P4 the Animation. Thing is the designs in Golden are a lot more tighter and closer to the game designs than P4:A. I'd buy this series, but too expensive as with all Aniplex's releases. Even for BD. I have right to say that as 1) I have BD player now and 2) I've shelled out for ALL the KLK LE sets. As much as I enjoyed the first show and the Persona series as whole, this is one I may have to pass up along with the P3 movies.

The animation is very stiff. Even some of the latter and more elaborated action pieces don't look very fluid.

Btw, art =/= animation.

Honestly, I love Persona 4, I own the PS2 game in both English and Japanese, the original anime on (dual audio, Region B) Blu-Ray, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 4 Arena, Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold, Persona Q, etc.

I enjoyed the Golden Animation and would've been willing to buy it even at ridiculous Aniplex prices, but... No dub, no buy. You've lost a sale on this one, Aniplex.

I have always wondered if its possible to just insert the golden episode with the regular show and watch in one go, or if they overlap too much.

But yeah this was an odd idea to say the least.

This show is technically a sequel to the last one. It seems to not have a connection at first, but they smartly inserted a timeline where this weird "retcon" (that is also canon) can be related.

spoiler[ Marie disappear from their memories later on, and this symbolizes the original P4 we now and love happening without her (even the Opening changes for the old one again).

And this is also what made Golden completely understandable as a valid addition, since it doesn't actually adds anything to the story, it just acts like the old storyline "forgot" to introduce this new element. ]

In any case, this is why I don't think story should deserve a C, since the story is completely dependent of the first season (it's basically an expansion that makes perfect sense in the context, when making the old series to be an obligatory watch before this one).

It's more like a B to me. A shame no one seems to have interpreted in hte same way people saw the Golden game to be (actually... the japanese sales says otherwhise, so I guess is just the western fanbase... or they just don't care and would buy anything that has Persona 4 on it... like what is happening a lot lately :v ).

Oh well Laughing
