AN OVERVIEW

Katsucon kicked off the convention season on February 12-14 in snowy National Harbor, Maryland. And amid newscasters throwing around cheesy words like “Snowmageddon,” “Snowpocalypse” and “Snoverkill,” fans still arrived in droves at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center.

This is the first time the convention has been held at the Gaylord, and it was a welcome change. Over its 16-year history, Katsucon has been held in many different locations in and around the Washington, D.C. metro area, but the Gaylord is the perfect home. There is more than enough room for con-goers to move about freely, and the hotel is beautiful. The ground floor of the building hosts a verdant paradise with gazebos, rustling brooks and an elaborate water fountain display. It was a stark contrast to the more than three feet of snow and below-freezing temperatures outside.

Katsucon is much more laid back than its summer counterpart, Otakon, held in Baltimore. The attendees here aren't trying to run over each other to get to their destinations. The long, unorganized lines that plague Otakon aren't to be seen here. Unfortunately, that laid-back attitude does not cure the con of the stupid antics of some of the attendees, including one teen who thought it would be fun to ram into me full-speed on his Heelies.
