GSC Movies Issues Statement Regarding Alleged Unauthorized Filming of Kuroko's Basketball Movie

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda

Malaysian cinema chain GSC Movies posted on its official Facebook page on Wednesday that parts of the Gekijōban Kuroko no Basuke Last Game (Kuroko's Basketball The Movie: Last Game) anime film were supposedly recorded in a Malaysian screening and posted online. GSC Movies wrote that the incident "greatly threaten[s]" the trust between the film's Southeast Asian distributor Odex, GSC Movies, and the Japanese copyright holders.

Odex previously posted about similar alleged unauthorized filming of the Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale film, which it claimed originated from screenings in Singapore and Malaysia. At the time, Odex wrote that the incident has resulted in the "very likelihood of Singapore and Malaysia being blacklisted for future anime film release," and that it is nevertheless working to "limit the damage suffered." GSC Movies' statement from Wednesday referenced the previous incident.

Odex and GSC Movies opened the film in Malaysia on May 4, and also screened the film in Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

The film opened in Japan on March 18 on 91 screens, and ranked #6 in attendance and #1 in its per-screen average in its opening weekend. The film sold 170,000 tickets for 250 million yen during its opening weekend.
