Gokusen is slang for "Gokudo no Sensei" (Gangster Teacher).
The actor for Shin Sawada, Jun Matsumoto, is in a Japanese Boy Band called Arashi.
On episode 10, while Yankumi talks to her class about becoming the cheerleading squad for the school's volleyball team, she sings a line of the opening theme of Attack No. 1, a famous shoujo anime that is volleyball-oriented.
In episode one, near 20:30, Yamaguchi-sensei is mistakenly called Yamada-sensei, a reference to the actress's (Yukie Nakama) previous live-action series called Trick, in which her name is Yamada. Trick 2 was being made at the same time of Gokusen.
The head teacher/vice principal actor (Katsuhisa Namase) was also a main character in Trick as a police officer named Yabe.
Spot the Shameless Plug: In episode 11, when Yankumi knocks over a stack of books in the faculty room, you'll see a tankoubon of the Gokusen manga among the pile.
