Akihabara's Pedestrian Paradise to Return on Sunday

posted on by Egan Loo
Tokyo's otaku district allows pedestrians on main street again after March 11 quake

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department announced on Tuesday that the tradition of zoning the main street of Tokyo's Akihabara otaku shopping district as pedestrian-only on Sundays (known as "pedestrian paradise") will resume on Sunday, April 17.

The weekly tradition in Akihabara ended in the wake of the hit-and-run and stabbings that resulted in the deaths of seven people in 2008. "Pedestrian Paradise" returned in January of this year, only to be put on hold again after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake of March 11. The tradition was already restored in Tokyo's Ginza and Shinjuku areas earlier this month.
