The American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom reported last week that Kim Dong Hwa's The Color of Earth manhwa was #2 among the top 10 most frequently challenged books of 2011. According to the office, there were more attempts to remove or restrict The Color of Earth in the United States last year than Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games trilogy (#3).
The manhwa follows the gradual coming-of-age of a girl in rural Korea. The following reasons were cited for the censoring attempts on The Color of Earth: "nudity; sex education; sexually explicit; unsuited to age group."
The most challenged books in the United States last year were Lauren Myracle's ttyl; ttfn; l8r, g8r series. Two classic books remain on the list: Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (#7) and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird (#10). In all, the Office for Intellectual Freedom catalogued 326 attempts to restrict or remove books in the United States last year.
