Akagi Gambling Manga Inspires 'Zawa' Necklace

posted on by Jennifer Sherman
Matching ring also features onomatopoeia from Nobuyuki Fukumoto's story

The online store for Takeshobo's Kindai Mahjong magazine began accepting orders for "zawa" necklaces inspired by Nobuyuki Fukumoto's gambling manga Akagi. "Zawa" is a common sound effect that the creator uses in his original mahjong manga.

The pendant necklaces are made of a tin and zinc alloy and have a matte silver finish. Each necklace costs 9,500 yen (about US$117), and Takeshobo's online shop is also selling a matching "zawa" ring for 8,400 yen (US$103). Because the jewelry will be built to order, it will take one to two months for orders to be shipped. The Kindai Mahjong Store offers a variety of other Akagi goods, including Valentine's Day or White Day cookies, as well as products inspired by the magazine's other titles.

The Akagi manga inspired the 2005-2006 television anime series Tohai Densetu Akagi -Yamini Maiorita Tensai- . Fukumoto also created the Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji manga and the various Kaiji manga and anime that followed.
