Miyagi Costumed Hero to Get Live-Action TV Series in July

Bakishin Riser Ryu's title character also appears for kids in quake-hit areas

Ryu Project confirmed last week that the tokusatsu (live-action special effects) television series Bakishin Riser Ryu based on its original character will debut this summer. The group created the title character last year to appear at local schools in Miyagi Prefecture and raise the spirits of children affected by the March 11 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster.

A "special edition" episode will premiere on Miyagi Prefecture's TBC network during the Watchin! Miyagi news program on July 3, and the regular series will begin airing on July 10. Takayuki Miyauchi will perform the series' theme song. Staff members have posted photographs from the series' recent filming sessions on their official blog.

In September 2011, the character Ryu began making free public appearances at schools and shelters in Miyagi. Children can shake the hero's hand and take pictures with him at the events. Ryu currently has appearances scheduled through December 2012.

The character's creators began streaming an "Episode Zero" promotional video for the project last fall. The 16-minute video provides Bakishin Riser Ryu's background story.
