Totoro Ceramic Lamp Shines With Glowing Tummy

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Handmade Totoro LED mini lamp is 3rd in MOVIC's Shigaraki pottery series

Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's grinning forest spirit Totoro is getting a lamp incarnation by the historic Shigaraki potters of Japan.

The table lamp is 7.5 centimeters tall (about 3 inches) and 5.3 centimeters (2 inches) wide. The lamp will retail at 3,990 yen (about US$51), and each is unique as they are all made by hand. Each includes an LED light to create its warm glow.

The traditions of Shigaraki potters date back to Japanese medieval times. They spent about eight months perfecting the Totoro lamp design and firing process.

The lamp is the third in a series of My Neighbor Totoro merchandise by the Shigaraki potters. They created a set of the film's three Totoro characters last July, and a set of four chopstick holders earlier this year.

Character goods maker MOVIC is accepting pre-orders for the first batch of lamps in mid-September and a second batch in early October.
