Nintendo Marks Kirby's 20th Year With Bubblegum Record Attempt

304+ bubble blowers needed to break world record at Penny Arcade Expo Saturday

Nintendo is planning to celebrate Kirby's 20th anniversary by vying for a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. The video game conglomerate wants to gather more than 304 people to blow chewing gum bubbles at Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle on September 1. The array of pink bubbles are supposed to honor game character Kirby.

The pink vacuum-mouthed character first appeared in HAL Laboratory's Kirby's Dream Land for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1992. The character has since appeared in some 20 game titles and made cameos in others, including the Super Smash Bros. series, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, EarthBound, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.

Nintendo's 20th anniversary campaign included the Kirby's Dream Collection: Special Edition (Hoshi no Kirby 20th Anniversary Special Collection), which shipped in Japan on July 19 for Nintendo Wii. The title bundles the six of Kirby's previous games (and three episodes of the Kirby: Right Back At Ya! anime series in the Japanese release). It debuted in Japan at #1 in its first week by selling 100,286 units. The game is slated for release on September 16 in North America, although Nintendo does not list the anime episodes in this English version.

The official Japanese website includes an ongoing prize campaign where customers can win original Kirby goods, including a beanbag cushion (pictured left), a collection of limited edition badges, a Wii disc case, and playing cards.

The bubblegum event is scheduled for Saturday, September 1 at PAX at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.
