Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Comic-Con Trailer, Gameplay Details Revealed

posted on by Karen Ressler
Sequel RPG slated for February 11 in N. America, February 14 in Europe

The official PlayStation YouTube channel began streaming a trailer on Thursday from this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con for the upcoming PlayStation 3 game Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

The official PlayStation blog also revealed several new gameplay details. A new battle system allows players to destroy pieces of the enemy monster, disabling attacks that require that part of the body, and allowing for different awards at the battle's end. Also, a new counter-attack system allows the player to fully counter physical attacks.

The blog entry also revealed a new location, a battle arena called "The Slaughterhouse," and a costume and weapon link for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn's Miqo'te.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released in Japan on November 21. It will arrive in the United States on February 11, 2014, and then in Europe on February 14, 2014.

Last month, Square Enix also unveiled a “Final Fantasy XIII – Lightning Ultimate Box” premium set. The set comes with all three games in the Final Fantasy XIII series, a soundtrack album with selected tracks from the trilogy, a pamphlet with original costume designs, and a Play Arts figure of heroine Lightning as she appears in the new game. The box will retail for 26,000 yen (about US$260), and will be sold in limited quantities from Square Enix's online store. Normal copies of the game will cost 7,770 yen (about US$78). Players who pre-order the game in North America and Europe will be able to unlock Cloud's uniform, band, and buster sword as equipment for Lightning.

The game will represent the final chapter in Lightning's story. The game centers around a 13-day countdown until the end of the world, and players must save humanity within 13 days and 13 nights.
