Akira Toriyama Draws Son Goku For Stephen Chow's Journey to the West Film

posted on by Bamboo Dong

Stephen Chow, the director behind greats like Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, set his comedic sights on the Chinese classic, Journey to the West, a novel that has given the world the unforgettable Sun Wukong—more popularly known outside China as The Monkey King, or Son Goku. The movie was released in China last year, and it's finally making its way to Japan on November 21.

While Akira Toriyama's own Son Goku (and Dragon Ball series) is only vaguely inspired by the Chinese novel, he was more than happy to contribute an illustration of The Monkey King to one version of the Japanese poster.

The collaboration is appropriate in more ways than one, as Chow has said that Dragon Ball had a strong influence on the way he portrayed The Monkey King in his film, making the circle of inspiration fully complete.
