Kyoto Temple to Unveil Star Wars Japanese Folding Screen Display

posted on by Carlos Cadorniga

The Force is about to be strong with Kyoto.

In commemoration of the upcoming, highly-anticipated release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto will soon unveil a special folding screen display featuring illustrations of the characters in the film.

Temporarily replacing the normal folding screen depicting conflicting Japanese gods Fūjin and Raijin, the display will illustrate protagonist Rey facing off against Sith warrior Kylo Ren. The screen will be painted by a Japanese artist named Taro Yamamoto, not to be confused with the actor or the deceased artist of the same name.

"I am truly honored to be depicting this modern mythology that transcends generations," Yamamoto stated.

The folding screen will be displayed at the end of the month on November 30 and will stay up until December 15.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the highly-anticipated continuation of the world-renowned sci-fi franchise and will kick off a new series of Star Wars films. Directed by J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Super 8), the film will premiere in the US and Japan on December 18.
