Get a Mr. Osomatsu-Style Makeover with "Matsumaker"

posted on by Eric Stimson

2015's surprise hit, Mr. Osomatsu, stands out with its old-fashioned, cartoony art style. This has made it very easy to imitate for fan artists everywhere, but now a fun online service, Matsumaker, makes designing a Mr. Osomatsu-style character a cinch.

The service gives you a set of options with your character's hair, shirt, mouth, eyes, and accessories, along with the background. The emphasis is mostly on the Matsuno brothers, of course, but there's also Iyami's buck teeth, Hatabō's flag, and a slew of girly hair styles and eyes.

The resulting creations are proving popular on Japanese social media with the hashtag #まつメーカー (Matsumaker). Several celebrities have even posted their Osomatsu alter egos.

The J-pop group Arashi (fan-made)

Teru from the rock band Glay

Maasa Sudō from the J-pop group Berryz Kōbō...

If you'd like to try to capture your trademark expression in Fujio Akatsuka's signature style, check out the service here, but as the site itself reminds us, this is unofficial. It's designed for use in online avatars and icons, but the creator asks fans not to trace the results and pass them off as original work.

The popularity of Mr. Osomatsu has made quite a few magazines sell out. The anime also lives on in a smartphone game based on certain scenes from the show.
