March comes in like a lion's Ryūnosuke Kamiki Appears at Shōgi Tournament

Gets ranked as amateur

March comes in like a lion revolves around the traditional Japanese chess-like game of shōgi, so it's not surprising that Ryūnosuke Kamiki, who plays Rei in the upcoming live-action film adaptation of the manga, appeared at J:COM-Hai, an annual shōgi tournament for kids. "I'd like to introduce many more people to shōgi through my involvement with March comes in like a lion," he said.

On the other hand, it might be surprising that Kamiki had no history with shōgi prior to working on March comes in like a lion; he had to undergo intensive training, particularly to convincingly snap down the game pieces (koma) like a real player. "You have to take the koma and place them unconsciously, as if you're gripping chopsticks while eating rice," he recalled. The Japan Shōgi Association, which sponsors the tournament, recognized Kamiki's efforts with an official certificate ranking him as an amateur player. The actor was startled and received the certificate with great humility. "I'd like to keep studying shōgi and learn more things," he said.

The tournament's winner, Seigo Itō, will be honored by having the sound of his koma-snapping used in the film in place of Kamiki's. The picture below shows him holding an oversized koma with "Right to Have koma Sounds Appear in Film" written on it.

The live-action version of March comes in like a lion will be released in two parts, with the first premiering on March 18 (naturally) and the second on April 22. The anime version, meanwhile, will premiere on October 8.

Rei's hometown, Tendō, lets fans of March comes in like a lion support the city with related merchandise sales.
