Hunter × Hunter's Yoshihiro Togashi Draws Avant-Garde Musicians

posted on by Eric Stimson

Jun Togawa, a pop artist known for her unconventional, operatic, and harsh vocal style and avant-garde artistic sensibility, has released an album with Vampillia, a rock/metal band with a similarly offbeat style. Watashi ga Nakō Hototogisu ("I am a Singing Cuckoo") looks back at Togawa's 35-year career with nine rearrangements of her past hits by Vampillia (and re-recorded by Togawa) and a new single, "Watashi ga Nakō Hototogisu." To accompany the release, manga artist Yoshihiro Togashi (Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter × Hunter) has drawn these two group portraits of the artists.

Togawa and Vampillia are performing pieces from the album at Tokyo's Liquidroom on January 13 and at Osaka's Umeda Club Quattro. Togashi, meanwhile, is on hiatus from drawing Hunter × Hunter due to recurring lower back pain. This has not prevented him from drawing a magazine cover and appearing at a party for fellow manga artist Osamu Akimoto, both in 2016.
