Tokyo Tribe Artist Santa Inoue Remembers the 90s in R&B Compilation CD

posted on by Kim Morrissy

Manga artist Santa Inoue is well known for drawing manga influenced by hip hop culture. Inoue is active as a club DJ and rapper, and when he's not drawing manga he has been known to draw CD album covers.

His latest work is a compilation album of 50 R&B songs from the 1990s. He selected the songs featured in the album, wrote all of the commentary, and drew all of the illustrations, including the cover art. Inoue shared his thoughts on 1990s R&B music: "I was living in Sagamiharashi [in the 90s]. All of my memories of that time came rushing to me, making me want to vomit it out. Feelings of anxiety and humiliation... The music of this era is imbued with all kinds of memories."

The CD will go on sale on December 5, and the first printing will come with a free sticker.

Inoue also recently shared a Japanese poster for the 2018 American basketball film Uncle Drew on Instagram, saying that he drew the poster himself.

Uncle Drew opened in Japanese cinemas on November 9.

Santa Inoue is best known for drawing Tokyo Tribe, which inspired a television anime adaptation in 2006 and a live-action film in 2014. Inoue's other manga include Rinjin 13-gō, Inoue Santa, and Born 2 Die. In 2017, Inoue moved to Los Angeles, and is currently drawing a manga about his experiences called Santa's LA Life.
