The staff of the Love Live! franchise announced via Twitter on Wednesday that the original series' idol group μ's will release a new single with an anime music video to celebrate the franchise's ninth anniversary.
μ's last single was MOMENT RING released following the Love Live! The School Idol Movie in 2016. The group also released the Solo Live! collection Memorial BOX III collection and the µ's Final LoveLive! ~µ'sic Forever♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪~ concert collection in 2016. MOMENT RING earned the Golden Disc certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan after it sold 113,278 copies in two weeks after it hit store shelves in 2016. The μ's group held their "μ's Final Love Live!" concerts at the Tokyo Dome on March 31-April 1, 2016.
μ's will reunite at the Love Live! Fes event in January. The event will be the franchise's first festival, and it will be held at Saitama Super Arena from January 18 to 19, 2020. The franchise's idol groups Aquors, Saint Snow, and Nijigasaki Academy's Idol Appreciation Club will also at the event.
The contracts of the voice actresses in the unit expired at the end of March 2016, but group member Emi Nitta stated at the time that the "μ's Final Love Live!" concerts would only be the final concerts with just μ's as a whole and by themselves (without other musical acts). She indicated that the concerts did not mark the group's "breakup." Group member Sora Tokui added that the "μ's Final Love Live!" concerts were planned as a culmination of their work.
