Asahi reports that a monument to Kankichi Ryoutsu, the main character of Kochikame, a long running and very popular manga series, will be unveiled at the Asakusa Jinja Shrine on August 6th. The manga series, which has been serialized in Shonen Jump since 1976, has sold over 140 million copies of its 145 graphic novels, has been adapted into a TV series and movie.
Rarely before has an anime series so keenly and uncomfortably struck home about the humorous travails of a social misfit. Its triumph is in creating an anti-moe protagonist who paradoxically winds up being intensely moe, too.
