News Translator Schodt Speaks on The Four Immigrants Manga

Frederik L. Schodt, the writer of Manga! Manga! and The Astro Boy Essays as well as the translator of several manga classics, will speak about Henry Kiyama's The Four Immigrants Manga: A San Francisco Japanese Experience 1904-1924 at the renovated Hotel Tomo in San Francisco, California on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. PT. Attendance is free, but attendees must reserve a place by emailing smcneil@afsc.org. Schodt translated this manga, which is considered one of the first comic books published in the United States. Overall, neither Pokemon the Movie: Black or its White counterpart really stands out from the already packed herd. While not terrible, these are films that can be safely left alone unless you or your child have a compulsion to truly catch 'em all.

Hiiro no Kakera is by no means a terrible show...it just isn't a very good one, either. With a stilted script and a team of heroes who feel incompetent, not to mention cookie cutter characters who do little to make themselves endearing or unusual, it does nothing to elevate itself above the masses.
