Junko Mizuno, 2 New Book Authors, Battle Royale Editor Interviewed

She and fellow "kawaii gothic" artist Mizna Wada are appearing in Southern California this Saturday. The Comics Journal magazine interviewed Jason Thompson on Viz's roots, Thompson's comic aspirations, and his Manga: The Complete Guide book. NPR's On the Media program posted an audio interview with Japanamerica author Roland Kelt about manga as a form of diplomacy for Japan. Publishers Weekly magazine's Comics Week interviewed Tokyopop's editor-in-chief Rob Tokar on this month's Battle Royale Ultimate Edition manga with added conceptual art and commentaries. Watase's Fushigi Yûgi is without a doubt one of the titles to set the standard for what “manga” in the United States has come to be. For this reason alone, it is a must-read. But even if you couldn't care a whit about its historical significance, it's still a fun story that may be enjoyed purely on its own terms.
