Oshii Introduces Tachigui Sequel at Tokyo Film Fest

Shin-Onna Tachigui Retsuden premieres in TIFF

After making a flamboyant red carpet entrance on the opening day of the 20th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), famed anime and live-action director Mamoru Oshii introduced his latest project on Sunday along with the other directors and cast members involved in the film. All of the directors and most of the main cast of Shin-Onna Tachigui Retsuden (True Female Tachigui: The Amazing Lives of the Fast Food Grifters), the live-action sequel to the experimental animated film Tachigui Retsuden, showed up at TIFF for the premiere. The film is a collection of short films by Oshii and other directors that all deal with the theme of food.

Despite the participants' fancy entrance the day before, the panel about the film was heavy on jokes and sarcasm. The directors of each part of the film, which include Oshii, Makoto Kamiya, Kenji Kamiyama, Takanori Tsujimoto and Hiroaki Yuasa, talked about their respective parts of the production. The actresses in attendance (Mabuki Andō, Hinako Saeki, Yōko Fujita, and Mako Hyōdō) joked about their various roles in the film. Mabuki Andō described her segment "Dandelion: Mabu of the Dining Hall" as a "nostalgic, nail-biting, heart-pumping, and slightly agonizing love story", while Yōko Fujita from the segment "Whispers in the Grass: Kumi of the Frozen Strawberries" described her film as "a mysterious story where sexual charms are used to deprive people of their snacks."

Oshii highlighted the high production quality that was used for the film, but admitted he was surprised that he was invited to TIFF to introduce it, adding, "if we get a good response here and make a sequel, it serves you right."
