Winter Sonata the Animation's Trailer Streamed Online (Updated)

Hit Korean drama's adaptation to have original lead actor reprising role

The official website for Winter Sonata the Animation, the adaptation of the hit live-action Korean drama series, has launched with a trailer. (In the linked page, select the "Flash version" on the right, and then select the Trailer link at the bottom.) The story follows two childhood friends — a boy and a girl — and the tragedy and angst that befalls them and those around them in the years between high school and young adulthood. The project was officially unveiled on Friday at Tokyo International Anime Fair 2008.

Daisuke Nakayama (Tweeny Witches, Amazing Nuts!'s "Global Astroliner Number" video) will direct and design the project with art director Hitoshi Ohno. Real Thing will produce the animation with assistance from Studio Cockpits and Studio CATS, as well as Studio Fuga for backgrounds. Japan's Total Promotion Inc. has been collaborating with South Korea's Key East on the project since December. A third of the Key East company is owned by Bae Yong-Joon, the drama's lead actor who rose to stardom in Japan when the drama was broadcasted there in 2004. He will reprise his role by voicing the anime version as well.

Update: The website also announced that the anime television series will premiere in Japan in Fall of 2009.
