Toei to Animate Mari & Gali for NHK-E Channel in March

posted on by Egan Loo
Series of science comedy shorts is 1st Toei program on NHK in 3 decades

The Toei Animation studio has announced on Thursday that it is collaborating with the Japanese public channel NHK-Educational on a series of shorts called Mari & Gali, which will premiere on March 31. The series will run within the Suiensā "scientific entertainment" program at 7:25 p.m. every Tuesday.

The five-minute shorts will feature Marika, a middle school girl dressed in Gothic Lolita fashion, and Galileo, an middle-aged scientist. The two will introduce scientific concepts to junior high and high school students with gag humor, music, and dancing. Other familiar-sounding characters, such as Newton (a grocery store employee) and Fleming (a part-time worker at an electrical appliance store), will also make appearances. An "episode 0" short already aired last November, the same month that Suiensā itself premiered on NHK-Educational.

Toei Animation has not produced a program for the NHK public broadcasting channels since 1978-1979, when it animated the Captain Future series.
