Masamune Shirow Working with Lucent on Squad Project

posted on by Egan Loo
Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed creator co-producing on tentatively titled project

The recently formed Lucent Pictures Entertainment production company displayed its Squad film collaboration with Masamune Shirow at Tokyo International Anime Fair 2009 on Wednesday. Shirow is best known for creating Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed, Dominion, and other manga and anime about mankind's less-than-utopian future. The tagline for the tentatively titled project is "A battle for the front mission — I'll cover your back." The other partners in the venture are Beagle and Cross Road. Lucent Pictures has yet to reveal the release details of the project.

Lucent Pictures is sharing its booth with the acclaimed anime company Studio 4°C; the two companies announced a strategic alliance and the establishment of a new studio, Lucent 4°C (L4C), on Tuesday. L4C is showcaing its "next-generation video techniques" at its two parent companies' booth at the fair. The booth's technical demos, such as the Sachiko project that director Kōji Morimoto (The Animatrix, Genius Party, Memories) has been developing since 2005, highlight L4C's combination of "animation footage + three-dimensional video techniques."
