40,000 in 1st day alone, topping Michael Jackson's This Is It's 30,000

The amazon.co.jp retail website has announced on Monday that it received 88,000 pre-orders for the Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Ha) film on Blu-ray and DVD within a week of February 8, the day it started accepting orders. 40,000 of those pre-orders came on the first day alone — topping the 30,000 that Michael Jackson's This Is It film received on its first day of pre-orders. The film will not ship until May 26.

This second film in Hideaki Anno and Khara's four-part remake of Gainax's Neon Genesis Evangelion science fiction anime series was released in theaters last June under the title Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. The new "2.22" version number represents the Blu-ray/DVD release's digital mastering with "retakes." The second film continued the story of a group of 14-year-olds entrusted with giant biomechanical units to protect Earth from mysterious Angels. While the first film hewed closely to the original television series, the second film went farther in a different direction.

Funimation released the first film in the remake, Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Jo), in North America last year in theaters and on home video. Like the second film, the first film had multiple retakes in its DVD releases, culminating with the latest "Evangelion 1.11" edition. Funimation's Blu-ray release of Evangelion 1.11 will ship on March 9.
