GetBackers Creators Launch Oniwaka to Ushiwaka Manga

Fantasy re-imagining of 2 real-life Japanese warriors 8 centuries ago

Yuya Aoki and Rando Ayamine, the writer/artist pair behind the GetBackers manga, have reunited to launch a new manga series called Oniwaka to Ushiwaka: Edge of the World in this year's 21st issue of Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine on Wednesday.

The 67-page first chapter is set during the late Heian era eight centuries ago, when the Taira samurai clan held power and just before the rise of the shogunate in Japan. This historical fantasy re-imagines the adventures of the real-life samurai leader Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Ushiwaka) and his loyal warrior monk Musashibō Benkei (Oniwaka).

The 21st issue also revealed that the next issue of Weekly Shōnen Magazine will have an "important announcement" regarding another manga series, Tozen Ujiie's Seitokai Yakuindomo slice-of-life comedy, on April 28.

Tokyopop has been publishing GetBackers in North America since 2004, while ADV Films released the anime version in 2004. "Yuya Aoki" is one of several pen names of Tadashi Agi, the writer of Kami no Shizuku, Psycho Busters, Kindaichi Case Files, Psychometrer Eiji , Bloody Monday, Kihei Senki Legacies, and many more manga and anime titles. Kodansha's Magazine Special had announced last year that Aoki and Ayamine were planning "their next work."
